New School Year Resolution…..Be A Mentor!!!
Several elementary, middle and high school students are in need of
mentors. Spending one hour with a student is very rewarding and
makes a difference in their life! For more information, contact
Kathy Scheulen at the Chamber office, 634-3616 x228.

The
Jefferson City Public Schools English for Speakers of Other
Languages program needs mentors for some of our foreign born
children who are learning English. We need mentors who could
read with the children or help with homework. Mentors do not
need to speak the child's native language. Mentors may commit
from 1 hour per week to 10 hours per week. Please call Lin
Dickerson at 659-3122 for information.

Less than an hour each week.
Any additional information you wish to include:
Mentoring does not require professional training, just a sincere
interest in young people, dedication and persistence. It keeps one
thinking younger and it’s cheaper than a facelift.

School where mentoring takes place: Jefferson City High School Grade
of Mentee(s): 12th
Number of years mentoring: 5
What are some of the activities you do with your mentee?
I ask about what is going on in their life. Helping them deal with
their family problems, which they all have, helps them do better in
school.
Why are you a mentor?
I understand now how important it is for children to have an adult,
in addition to their parents, that they can trust and confide in.
Why would you encourage others to mentor students?
The best way to feel good about yourself is to give to others.
How much time does mentoring take?
Not much. 30 minutes a week per student.
